General Psychotherapy

We’ve all heard of psychotherapy. In popular media, we see people reclining on couches while being asked about their past and then given solutions.
In reality, it’s much more personal than that.
There are a huge variety of treatments available in psychotherapy – with equally huge potential to help you. Our attuned and compassionate experts will develop a customised programme suited precisely for your needs.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a general term that covers a huge range of talking therapies. There’s a common misconception that it’s all about being told what you need to do. In fact, therapy is more about improving your understanding of yourself and how you react to the world. You’ll work with an impartial professional who will support you without becoming emotional themselves.

Therapists are there to listen to you and help you find the solutions that work best for you. Of course, they’ll make suggestions, but any change will result from a collaborative process.

What does psychotherapy help with?

Psychotherapy can help with a huge range of things. It could be that you want to understand your inner workings better, or you might have recently experienced difficulties such as bereavement or a relationship breakdown. You might have an existing mental health diagnosis such as anxiety or depression you’d like support with, or you might just want to discuss your issues with someone neutral and unconnected to your personal life.

Whatever might be troubling you, psychotherapy can help.

How does psychotherapy work?

This is nearly impossible to answer as it has such a broad application. Humans are all unique, and your treatment will be too. How you respond to treatment will be largely up to you. It’s not about tuning you up and sending you out into the world – we aren’t machines; however, you can expect to gain a greater understanding of:

  • How your past affects your present
  • How you respond to different types of people
  • Potential triggers
  • Your existing maladaptive coping strategies (substance use, self-harm, etc.)
  • Your patterns in relationships

During your time with one of our therapists, you’ll develop healthy coping strategies that work for you. It’s not a prescriptive process where we tell you to do something, and you follow along. Rather, it’s a collective effort over a longer time period. Mental health is a marathon rather than a sprint!
